    Hello,
I am currently living in AZ but hope to be able to move back to Maine/New Hampshire in a year or 2. I am an RN, I work in Psych. I worked in the state prison as an LPN for 3 years. I worked in Home Health for a short time. I have no real acute care hospital experience--What are my chances of getting a job in psych when I move back to New England?

Hi all! I have been an LPN for over 30 years with experience in Geriatrics, Med/Surg, OB and Labor and Delivery, Home Health Care, Ambulatory, and Dr.'s office. Of all the above I really loved the idea and the job of Home Health Care. Back in the 1980's, however, when I was full time Home Health Care the patient's had a hard time getting the funding from Medicare/Medicaid. These were vent patients who required nursing care as well as providing respite care for the family. The two families that I was involved with ended up with the patient outliving the spouse. This, I can attest to, was due to the long hours, stress, and constant battling with the "system" to get and keep the nursing hours in which they were receiving. It was really just too bad. I do hope the "system" has changed somewhat.

My company, Mitchell Martin Inc. in NYC, is sponsoring a free 3 hour training for practicing clinicians who are licensed Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses or Nurse Practitioners. This seminar is intended to “ease the fear and anxiety” that medical staff may experience when encountering a patient who is non-verbal and developmentally or physically disabled. We've found that most nursing professionals have little or no clinical training in communicating with non-verbal patients in a medical setting, whether it be in a hospital, skilled nursing facility, or hospice facility. Participants will view a slide show which shows the horrific treatment adults and children received at Willowbrook in Staten Island before it was closed down by the State. Attendees will include FNPs, RNs and LPNs who feel there is a need for education in the field of caring for people with disabilities and mental retardation. It is an opportunity to resolve the fears and anxiety among nursing professionals who may reject an opportunity to care for, or to work with, wheelchair-bound patients with MRDD because of their minimal, or lack of knowledge, in communicating with patients or understanding their special needs.

We invite nursing professionals from the NY Metro area to participate in this round table meeting and personally meet individuals with DD and witness the minds of these brilliant individuals who are just trapped in a body that doesn’t function but their brains are just amazing! Witness how these talented, yet non-verbal, individuals communicate through drawings and artwork.

Email mromano@hcmmi.com or call 646-723-7308 to register for an upcoming training in Novemeber 2008 through January 2009. Training is limited to nursing professionals licensed in the states of NY, NJ and CT. Registrants who complete this training will receive a Certificate of Completion in “Caring For Patients With Cerebral Palsy and Mental Retardation."

    Thanks!

Looking for any psych nurses out there that want to share innovations in the treatment of our unique group of patients. Also looking for a place to practice since I was just let go by my last employer.

Need to strongly advise anyone out there from taking a position with any Behavioral Centers of America facility. They currently have hospitals in Ohio, Texas, and Michigan and are looking to add more in the next year. I have witnessed some things during thelast six months that caused me to lose m job and want to male sure that nobody else walks into this ticking time bomb. It is only a matter of time before they get caught and may end up in some serious trouble. Please pass this along to anyone else that you know... Avoid BCA facilities.
