Key Passage: Matthew 6:19-34
Topic: Christian Living; Faith/Trust
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:21, ESV)
You probably don't have a secret treasure buried in your backyard or hidden under the bed. But we each have something we treasure; something that we value highly, hold dear, take delight in. Something that's our "pride and joy," that's very precious to us.
Maybe it's parked in the garage or hanging in the closet. Maybe your "treasure" is off at college or toddling around the living room. Or it's tied to your work, your hobby, something you've been given or that you've have earned.
Most of our treasures are things that die, rust away, get broken or lost or stolen. They're temporary--important to us but meaningless to anyone else.
Jesus talks about our treasure as a reflection of our hearts; it's where we put our heart. Your "treasure" has a place of significance, a point of focus for you. It's your first priority, your last concern.
But is it eternal treasure? Do you value what God values? Or is it just whatever's been marketed to you?
It's easy to get caught up in things...but they come and go. We pour all our hope into another person...only to be disappointed or left behind. But when you put your treasure in heaven, it's in God's hands. And that reduces your worries here in this life.
Think about it: What do you treasure most...right now? What is it that you couldn't "live without"? Is it something that will last for eternity...or just for now? Does it line up with what God says is worthy of your time, your energy, your love?
Maybe it's time to do a little housecleaning. And to "seek first the
kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you" (Matthew 6:33, ESV).
