Pet advice

I would like to open this forum to anyone who needs advice on their pets.  You can ask me anything and I will do my best to answer.  I am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to figuring out what is ailing a pet and giving advice on the next step to make your pal feel better, even if it is just, "get your baby to the vet ASAP!"  I will also try to give my best advice on all topics too!  For example, with the holidays coming up keep baker's chocolate away from dogs!  The smallest piece can kill!  Never give a dog or a cat Tylenol (Acetamenophen).  Especially never give it to cats unless you want to kill them.  It causes the cat's body to attack red blood cells and the cat becomes anemic and without RBC the cat becomes unable to take in oxygen and ends up suffocating to death.  I am curious to see how this forum does.  Remember ask anything, I like a challenge!

This is a cool forum! If you could ever teach our 3 Huskies to make outside (they have a dog door), instead of in the house, you'd be worth your weight in gold. We've tried everything, but they are free spirited animals with a mind of their own. We still love them to pieces.

Do they use the doggie door at all?

Were they pottie trained before adding the doggie door?

They use it mostly during the day, but often not at night, as they don't like going out in the dark. They are all different ages, so each of them were trained at different times. I think we had the dog door for all of them. They have a mind of their own, and don't care what we want, but outside of that, they are very loving, and awesome dogs.

If they don't like the dark you might think about putting a sensor light out there so if they go out at night a light will come on.  You may also want to go back to basics of training. Start by only letting them go out when you take them.  Gradually reintroduce the door.  Everytime they use it reward them with a treat.  You can even do this when you are not home by putting out a treat dispenser so they will look forward to going outside or keep a favorite toy out there.  Just a few suggestions.  Sounds like you love 'em anyway, but it has to be frustrating!

Our yard is fully lit at night. We have tried everything under the sun already. Next time, we may get a different breed that is more trainable, but we'll deal with it in the meantime. That's all we can do. They are less frustrating than my real kids.  :-)

I understand completely!  It took my dog about 3 years until she was completely potty trained.  I went through a lot of carpet cleaning and new carpet!  Not fun.  Thankfully, when I moved into my new houses she has been wonderful.  She only tinkled once in my first new house, she tried to tell me she had to go and I didn't listen.  She hasn't gone at all in my new house I live in now, thankfully!  It was a live and learn lesson!

We have all tile. We learned that lesson long ago. When we moved into our house 12 years ago, we got premium carpet everywhere, and some nice area rugs. What a waste. It was all out the door within 1-2 years! It's still a pain to clean up,but much less so than before!

Good idea!  You have more patience than I do though!  I have gotten so used to her not messing that I don't know what I would do if she started again!  She has run of the house when I am gone.  She just attained that privilege when she turned 6.  She is 7 now.  I dread the day if she gets older and starts losing her bladder control.  I would have to keep her in the kitchen then, which isn't too bad.  it is a large kitchen with vinyl flooring and a door to look out.  I hope I won't have to do that though!  She likes her new found freedom and seems to really do well.  I can leave her up to 14 hours sometimes and she is fine.  That is a rarity, but it is nice not to have to stress completely out if I can't get to her within 8 hours!
