Word of the week - Hope

Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 11:12 PM EST [General]

I am a little behind in blogging. The last couple of days have been crazy! Dad's head cleared up on Sunday but then he had other reactions to the remainder of the antibiotics in his body on Monday. I thought his C. Diff had returned, but thankfully, the nurse said it hadn't. I held a bucket for Dad three hours on Monday evening. Thankfully yesterday was somewhat normal.

Today was great in that I was being contacted by potential clients for summer cruises. I had posted on our Facebook the great prices of Carnival Cruise Lines and other vacations. The economy is tough but travel is still being recognized as a stress reliever and the companies are making it easier for people to get that stress relief! I am thankful that I am able to help others and especially my father through the special programs.

I hope tomorrow will give me the opportunity to blog more.

    New Start

I went to see Dad in the hospice ward of the hospital where he had been for a week. He didn't recognize me. I went and asked the nurse how long that had been going on and if it happened to her. She said he did not recognize her either and the physician who had seen him earlier in the day thought Dad was on the decline. I told them to discontinue the IV antibiotics and send him home; Dad's wish is to die at home.

The nurse told me that she has seen patients react negatively to antibiotics and their own immune systems learned how to fight the bugs on their own. Apparently Dad is one of those people. He recognized his nurse and me today. When talking to him today, he had no clue that i visited him yesterday. He had very little recollection of the day other than he was given cranberry juice. He asked me if I did that and I said I did.

Every day is an adventure with Dad. I have been learning to treasure each day with him, though not many of them are easy. I am thankful that I have been able to get closer to him in the years after Mom's death. I believe that God kept me here in Chicago to care for Dad.

I am thankful that I can work from home with our travel agency and do some other smaller jobs outside the house while caring for him. He tells me how appreciative of the care I give him. Hearing a thanks is sometimes all it takes to keep doing the tougher things in life.
