As some of you may know, I am a son and I am a small business owner, but first I am a son. I am the full-time caregiver for my father who is on hospice care at home. I work from our living room as I have free time after caring for all his needs.

Some people are more cryptic than others, they speak in riddles and symbols more than speaking directly to the point. This drives direct individuals crazy! However, symbols have always been important to remembering the past and promoting growth or action towards a goal. Symbols are also useful in communicating with others who do understand the spoken language.

I have three personal symbols and they define  my personal vision. I aim to put God above all things and in all things, to serve others utilizing all the gifts and experiences God gave me, and help them find peace, strength and wholeness.

My three personal symbols are part of the business names I utilize. These three symbols have been part of my life since before high school. They are the eagle, the sword, and the anchor.

The eagle has a long history of representing strength, wisdom, foresight and leadership. It is also a symbol for the country I love and proudly defend. These are all attributes that I strive to sharpen within me. I go to God to give me strength of spirit, soul, and body. I also ask Him to open my mind as I study within my disciplines and outside of them.

Eagles also fly high above storms. Storms are part of life. Some of them really rock us to the core. God says in Isaiah 40:31 "They that wait upon the Almighty shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, walk and not faint". I've gone through a lot of life shaking storms in the last 18 years; some of these storms I tried to make it on my own and others I have hoped in God. My experiences prove to me that waiting upon the Almighty takes me above the storms. I still feel the effect of the storms, but they do not effect me as negatively and do not cause as much anguish.

The anchor was symbolic to early Christians as another form of the cross. The cross represented the sacrifice God through Christ made for them. It was a reminder to them to be anchored in Christ no matter what opposition they faced and many of them faced martyrdom and exclusion of business and other aspects of daily living. The anchor in the same way reminds me that my life is secure and I can draw strength of spirit and soul even when my physical body is weak.

The Sword represents the Word of God the Bible - the source of truth. Though many in the world around me do not think twice about lying to move ahead in the world, I live by the Book that speaks God's truth and gives me a life manual for all relationships - friend and foe.

Symbols are not gods and they do not give strength themselves. Their purpose is to point individuals to the One that does give strength of spirit, soul, and body. I hope that every time I look at these symbols I will go to the One who gives me strength and that I can be used to help others find solutions - a small light leading others to the true Light.
