The femoral nerve is the largest branch of the lumbar plexus, descending beneath the inguinal ligament at the level of the lesser trochanter. The femoral nerve divides into several branches, the largest being the saphenous nerve which descends along the medial aspect of the leg to the ankle; accompanied by the great saphenous vein. The saphenous nerve innervates the anterior lower leg, some of the ankle and part of the foot.
