A new round of federal funding will support many medical jobs in Denver.
More than 60 companies throughout Colorado will receive a total of $23 million in grants and tax credits through the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project Program, which is being administered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the National Institutes of Health.
The Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project Program, which was created under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, is aimed at promoting research and development of products and therapies that can significantly advance the healthcare industry throughout America.
"The Affordable Care Act is helping Colorado companies create jobs and bolster the economy while addressing our critical health care needs," Gov. Bill Ritter said. "Colorado companies are significantly benefiting from the new law, ranking in the top ten of all states receiving grants through this research program."
The Treasury Department and NIH received more than 5,600 applications requesting more than $10 billion in funding. A total of $1 billion in credits has been awarded to 2,923 companies specializing in biotechnology and medical research throughout 47 states and the District of Columbia so far.
"This is a unique program in which $1 billion was allocated for tax credits and grants for start-up companies in the bioscience industry to help encourage innovation, advance technology and help ensure that the U.S. remains competitive in this industry," Holli Baumunk, president & CEO of the Colorado BioScience Association, said.
"Colorado has a nationally ranked bioscience cluster with the majority of companies being in the start-up phase," she continued. "Demonstrating the tremendous entrepreneurial climate in the state, more than 100 projects within Colorado have been funded through this program, bringing in more than $23 million for research activities."
